Such were the existing conditions when, in 1587, Hideyoshi calledupon the Korean monarch to explain the cessation of the old-timecustom of exchanging envoys. Somany suffered by his reforms, and in such quick succession, that thehatred he provoked could scarcely have been kept within control. Thus, Japan came to hold in Manchuria a positionsomewhat contradictory.
